letting the engine fully warm up before driving it - namely the engine oil itself. Cold oil is thick and more likely to hydrodynamically wedge between a ball and the race, causing the ball to skid and wearing the bearings.... but I think most failures of these turbos is due to garbage going through the bearings - garbage introduced when they are installed onto a fresh rebuild. Seen that a ton of times destroy a perfectly good set of journal bearing turbos, so I know it happens to the BB units as well.
